frank beanland (1936-2019)

Beanland was born in Yorkshire in 1936.

He attended the Slade School of Fine Art 1959-61 and Hull College of Art 1952-57, where his tutors included Frank Auerbach.

He exhibited with the Porthleven Group 1962-64, and during this time he focused on abstract painting, most notably a series of spot paintings.

He has exhibited widely, including a succession of solo exhibitions in London and elsewhere, in addition to numerous commissions for screens and textiles for hospitals, churches and private residences.

Recently Beanland has experimented with the use of acrylics on newspaper, enjoying the liberation that no-cost paper encourages, producing deceptively simple abstract works. It is said that he wants his newspaper paintings to be enjoyed for what they are, as celebrations of colour.

It comes as no surprise to learn that Beanland has previously worked in printing and textiles, his sensibility with colour and pattern would translate well into contemporary fabric or rug designs.
